Susan Blackman is a partner in the firm’s Labor and Employment Group, where her practice focuses on employment law and business immigration. She serves as Chair of the firm’s Business Immigration Law Team. Susan advises business managers about legal issues relating to employees, and represents employers in federal and state court cases involving all types of employment-related lawsuits. She also advises managers regarding employee discipline, personnel policies and compliance with employment and immigration laws.
Susan has extensive experience handling matters before the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (formerly INS), the U.S. Department of Labor, and Consulate Offices around the world operated by the U.S. Department of State. She is a member of the American Immigration Lawyers Association and has been selected for inclusion in The Best Lawyers in America, for both immigration law and employment law. She has also been recognized by Virginia Business magazine as among Virginia’s “Legal Elite” and was named by Virginia Super Lawyers as one of the top 25 female lawyers in Virginia.

- Obtained numerous L-1 visas for international transferees and H-1B visas for engineers, accountants, teachers, financial analysts, scientists, and other professionals.
- Defended employer in multi-plaintiff litigation involving 26 employees alleging discrimination and retaliation under Section 1981.
- Performed audit of employer’s I 9 Forms to ensure compliance with U.S. immigration laws.
- Represented technology company in suit filed by former CEO involving breach of contract and related claims.
- Developed immigration strategies for American company to obtain "green cards" for employees in hard-to-fill job positions.
- Won a jury verdict in favor of the employer in a federal suit alleging sexual harassment and retaliatory discharge.
- Obtained visas for executives transferred to work in the United States for a subsidiary of a European equipment manufacturer.
- Won summary judgment in favor of an employer in a race discrimination lawsuit in federal court.
- Negotiated and drafted Executive Employment Agreement including noncompetition covenant.
- Helped employer obtain labor certification to pursue lawful permanent resident status for software engineer.
- Won an injunction in state court to protect an employer against exploitation of its trade secrets by a former employee.
- Obtained dismissal of a charge of disability discrimination filed at the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission alleging failure to accommodate.
- Secured a "green card" for a Programming Manager of a major franchiser with business in the United States and Canada.
- Counseled employer concerning discharge of an employee who threatened coworkers and reportedly had a psychological disorder.
- Obtained favorable result for an employer in a federal case involving overtime pay.
